North Lanarkshire : Sports Comprehensives Pilot
ST MAURICE'S HIGH, ST MARGARET'S HIGH & BRAIDHURST HIGH
What is this?
This project piloted inclusive sports comprehensives, involving three high schools in the authority area - St Maurice's High School, Cumbernauld; St Margaret's High School, Airdrie; and Braidhurst High School, Motherwell. The pilot looked at new ways of using participation in sport to improve ethos and attainment; to build self-esteem; and to promote social inclusion by integrating more sport within the school curriculum and encouraging more involvement out of school hours.
FLaT involvement?
FLaT support was provided to explore diversity and flexibility in the curriculum with the three pilot schools and more generally to promote the Executive's wider priorities of social and educational inclusion, health/fitness and citizenship.

Project aims?
- To provide inclusive centres for the learning and teaching of sport and physical education and the delivery of community sport.
- To develop the three pilot schools as key players in the provision of opportunities for health and fitness within the community.
- To adopt a broad based view of physical education and sport which will support individuals and schools in the development of self-esteem, motivation and raised attainment and achievement levels.
Project outcomes?
- Increased participation in sport by young people in the authority area.
- Increased learner attainment, achievement, confidence and self-esteem.
- An enriched curriculum through enhanced sports' provision and opportunities.
- Made a contribution to narrowing the gap between higher and lower levels of attainment and the wider regeneration of the area.
Timescale?
The project was started in June 2002 and was completed in June 2005.
Level of Support?
FLaT support was a grant of £260,000 plus evaluation costs.
