East Renfrewshire: Use of Interactive Computer Driven Whiteboard with 5-14 Curriculum

NEILSTON PRIMARY SCHOOL

What is this?

This project sought to challenge the existing methods that were being employed at Neilston Primary School by allowing the development of computer-based packages of lessons to deliver the 5-14 curriculum. The project aimed to use an interactive computer driven whiteboard with "voting pads" to produce a selected group of work packages for the 5-14 curriculum. The selection covered various subjects, e.g. Maths, ICT & Environment Studies. The selection also covered various stages from P1 to P7. The advantages of these packages were that they could be quickly revised, tailored and evolved depending on the needs of the children. The packages could also be modified to reflect any changes in the curriculum.

FLaT involvement?

FLaT support was provided to explore the use on interactive technologies (interactive whiteboards and voting technology) in gauging levels of understanding in aspects of the 5-14 curriculum.

Links with National Priorities?

1. Achievement & Attainment;
2. Framework for Learning;
3. Inclusion and Equality:
5. Learning for Life.

Project aims?

The key project aims are as follows:

  • To provide timely and accurate feedback on the level of understanding of the lessons by each individual pupil or by the class as a whole;
  • To use voting pads to provide a mechanism for pupils to supply answers that can be analysed and recorded to provide formative assessment;
  • To assist pupils with dyslexic, or with restricted motor skills to become more involved in the lesson and to assess their understanding without their difficulties having an adverse affect on the results of the assessment;
  • To empower the teachers with new tools and confidence to facilitate their development of new techniques for the delivery of the curriculum, thereby enabling a higher degree of pupil interaction in the lessons; and
  • To increase pupil engagement by using a diverse range of multimedia.

Project outcomes?

  • Teachers became trained and gained confidence in the use of the interactive whiteboard and "voting pads" in an innovative manner;
  • Staff employed their teaching expertise to allow them to develop new ways of presenting the curriculum;
  • Results of the formative assessments provided by the "voting pads" were used to produce evidence of the child's progress. Results were also be used to re-assess individual learning programmes;
  • Various work packages that covered the 5-14 curriculum were developed. Where possible, these work packages were evaluated in the classroom by the school Senior Management Team, teachers, classroom assistants and pupils;
  • Teaching pack produced which included guidelines, training tips and worked examples; and
  • Feedback from various sources to be used to produce an innovative approach to the delivery of the 5-14 curriculum.

Timescale?

The project was started in October 2004 and finished in June 2005.

Level of Support?

FLaT support was a grant of £11,970.
